Tamiya Volkswagen Beetle Rally – MF-01X

I purchased a Tamiya Volkswagen Beetle Rally – MF-01X for a bit of fun, this four wheel drive chassis really sparked my interest and reminded me of those old Tamiya models people first used to get in to drifting.

The MF-01X features a rear mounted motor, and uses a prop shaft to transmit power to the front wheels. It features a robust, easy to maintain monocoque frame. It is at home on road and flat dirt surfaces.

My original plan was to create a nice little rally chassis but as the build (Which was awful) progressed I decided not to go down that road straight away. I thought it would be pretty cool to see this beetle going sideways. I went with my trademark black paint job and added some MST adjustable wheels with pink inserts from Shapeways and created the Muki Beetle.

Will it drift?

I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to create a new feature “will it drift?” taking a pretty stock RC car to a track and seeing if it could drift seemed a pretty neat idea in a world of expensive models and big egos could a plucky little Tamiya stand out?

The answer

If you want to go dictionary definition it didn’t drift, power sliding is the term most would use but what is good enough for a CS Chassis is good enough for me. So in my my opinion yes it did drift it also did a pretty good job of it. The only change to the standard setup was using the control tire at MDS, it was ran using the Tamiya Torque Tuned motor and ESC provided.

A few people had a go with the Tamiya MF-01X and it put a smile on their face this simple little chassis was a blast. It was so much fun a ran a fair few batteries through it on the day it was out to test and it was able to keep up with the rest of the cars on track.

To sum it up

The Tamiya MF-01X is a god awful build but it’s a hell of a lot of fun to drive, it looked epic going sideways. It also goes to show you still don’t have to spend stupid money to have fun on track and I am confident a few more of these will be sliding in to peoples collection after it’s appearance at MDS.

Now the question is answered it will be going back to its original purpose and becoming a little rally car. It may make a return to track one day who knows but for now its parked up in Muki HQ awaiting it’s next mission.

Shapeways 3D Printing

Shapeways are a unique 3D printing service offering a print on demand services for creative minds to bring their creations to life. I was lucky enough to be sent some of their products to review recently.

I am a big fan of 3D printed stuff it has opened up a whole new level of detail to our hobby but some stuff I have seen lacks a bit of quality so that was the first thing I looked at when my package arrived from Shapeways. First things first all the items were so well packed, which when you are dealing with fragile items is essential Shape ways have you covered here.

Quality

So, let’s talk quality, all the items I received do require finishing (Painting) but I don’t mind that it allows you to put your own stamp on things. Print quality is outstanding the products are so crisp you would thing they were molded not printed.

As I am putting together a scale garage at the moment so the bulk of by items were centered around that theme. The level of detail in each item is incredible not only is it a testament to the quality of the print it also highlights the brilliance of the designers involved. Each time you look at a product you can’t help but marvel at the detail from the beautiful chain on the engine hoist to the delicate spring at the base of the pump truck not one thing has been missed from any of their products.

Quality does however come at a price and some of the items do carry some pretty hefty price tags but in my opinion the products and the time spent making them warrant that cost. I needed to paint the items I was sent to bring out the detail. I used Tamiya acrylic paints and had a blast putting the finishing touches to the items I was sent.

The range

In terms of a dedicated drift range things are a little limited at the moment but but is growing all the time however there are still some awesome parts available. Where Shapeways do come in handy though are with their scale garage items there is a ton of choice. Shapeways also have an extensive range of other RC parts available from classic Tamiya bits to the latest trick bits for your rock crawler.

As I mentioned I was lucky enough to be sent a pretty decent amount of stuff to sink my teeth in to. I have already touched on the level of detail in the products so from this point on I am going to let the pictures do the talking.

History

1. Please tell us how it all started?

First off all we are very honored be featured.
Thank you all for reading our story.

It all started back in early 2013 we were driving CS at the time, not competition, just for fun. We were not really a team back then, 3 guys who starting with rc drifting, we drove together at garage workplace in the weekend. One day Tin came across a Japanese Video, didn’t we all :-P. And he was hooked from that day on. Knowing we were not to reach the level of the CS competition drivers quick. He told the guys “Lets go RWD it’s the hot thing in Japan” He could not convince both at first but after he converted his EA (Eagle Racing – red.) Ta05 and got it running better and better. They tried it and got hooked just like him. It was so natural the way you needed to drive the car.
At the time there was no RTR RWD chassis, so 2 of us decided to convert a DP to a nice sliding RWD roller. From that day, we were converting it to a WUN FRD. Even a current CS chassis had to believe it: the DIB became also a RWD.

We decided: gone with AWD, RWD is the future. So seeing we were to go 100% RWD from that day on. RWD-Freak was a logical choice as a Team Name. To be honest we had it rough at first. Driving amongst the AWD guys. Speed was not all that. Also back then RWD was to be considered cheating. Because hey why would you run with a Gyro?.

But we kept going, knowing it was the future.
We kept improving and found the right tires. And suddenly speed was no longer an issue. We kept getting better and better while AWD was still at its peak in Holland. We tried to promote RWD as much as we could. By organizing RWD-Meetings. And met new members like Joerie and Pieter, Both never left. Also Pascal Joined sometime after and is also a team member that never left. Of course we have our Body builder Martin Lansink which we are very happy to have in our team.

Present

1. Are there any specialities in the team or any team member that focus on?

We have some specialties within the team Martin Lansink off course body shell builder at its finest.
Pascal who is our “Bob the builder” with chassis, Awan, Joerie and Pieter focuses on the D1-10.nl Competition

2. You guys don’t go after publicity much, compare to other teams. why is that?

We no longer need it, RWD is where we wanted it to be today. At the moment RWD is popular than ever.

3. Where do you guys drift, i.e. where can we find you?

Currently after our home base closed, our beloved Streetjam.nl track ran by the guy we all know as Capt Caveman. It is somewhat hard, the local tracks do not have structured opening times where we can plan some weeks in advance so last time the whole team was together was some time ago. So some of us can drive more than others at Drifted or DAG. And now and then at Megadrom (Germany – red.).

4. How do you guys feel about the current state of RWD, some people say that it’s being too aggressive, too much speed, not scale compare to the real deal. what are your thoughts about that subject?

Yes…some of them are really too aggressive and too much speed. This is for the RWD addicts among us just a pain in the ass. You can’t normally make a train for a round because the speed difference are too much. This is why some guys don’t want to drive competition anymore as well.

Future

1. (1 / 2) How do you see RWD to be develop in the future?

At this moment the development keeps rising and there is no ends so far…

2. (2 / 2) What do you like to see further in the RWD scene?

It’s too popular right now…so we need more local tracks

3. Are there any plans for the team for 2018 and/or further, team growth, more focus on certain specialities?

In 2018 we decide to come out with the team bodies that is designed by Martin All lexus RCF’s and we keep doing the RWD things like always. Currently we have a member stop. But who knows 😉

Drift Talk: MDS and a Monday morning moan about stuff.

It’s Monday, it’s time to moan but it’s not all moaning there is some MDS news in here amongst the moaning and general observations.

MDS @ JAE

MDS @ JAE, myself and the rest of the MDS crew have been invited to put on a drift event at the UK’s biggest Japanese car show in September. Naturally we are honoured to have such an epic opportunity to put RC drifting in front of a whole new potential audience. The event takes place between the 31st of August and the 3rd of September our event will run from the 1st till the 3rd, over at MDS we are busy making plans and putting things in place to make this event special.

The event will be open to all our regulars and the wider drift community with full weekend tickets and Saturday only tickets also available. We will be running two tracks and demo cars for the public to try, originally we were going to run a full weekend comp but we feel that won’t show off drifting in the best light due to the stop start nature of competitions. We have decided instead to run the weekend as we run every other MDS event, you show up you drift and you have fun. I think if people can see a huge group together having a laugh and getting those drift trains going it will do far more for the hobby than a structured comp.

For me RC drifting is a social thing to do, the social aspect is just as important as the drifting itself. If we can show that off to people it will attract a lot more people to the hobby. So hopefully you can join us to show off what we do and try and get some more interest generated in our hobby.

CONCERNS

I love drifting, I love promoting and pushing the hobby and I do feel over 3 years Yokomuki has established itself as a fairly recognised name in the UK at least, not because we are fantastic drifters but because we care about what we do and want to see it progress as a hobby. Over the last 3 or 4 years I have watched drifting go from strength to strength in the UK, while shops have tried and failed the community has stuck together and created its own venues to drift at NRD, WRCC, MDS Unit 4 and many more.

I do have two concerns at the minute which I am sure I am not the only one who has them, one is not so major the other one I think is I will let you decide which one is which.

1, Venues you can’t have too many is the attitude I think most will have on this, however the more choice you have the harder it gets to keep all these venues going. People like to sample the delights of as many venues as they can which is natural, this year I have been to DRC (Before it got boomed to death), WRCC, NRD, Unit 4 and of course MDS.

I have a limited amount of drift tokens to cash each month due to being married with two kids and need to find that balance between drifting and family time. Every month I will cash in tokens to help run the event at MDS this then leaves 1 maybe 2 weekends where I can drift elsewhere that’s when the hard choices come because of the amount of venues available now. I have a massive amount of respect for anybody who tries to run a venue whether it’s a pop up track or a permanent venue it takes a lot of hard work to make them successful.

Loyalty will be a big part of making tracks work you need a good core of regulars to keep you going, we have built up a good group of regulars at MDS as I am sure WRCC and NRD have and no doubt Tim will at Unit 4. When you are fond of the people involved with running other tracks it makes those decisions all the more difficult as you want all of them to work out, because if there are no tracks we are all stuck with cars we can’t use.

I think it will be down to the community organising itself better to make these venues work because if the whole community is at one venue the others are losing money. You don’t want it to get to a stage where venues are closing all the time. We have been very lucky at MDS that when new tracks like Unit 4 have opened they have always tried to work with us and our dates so we don’t clash, the community was brought together in large at NRD on Saturday who have had a few slow weeks due to supporting the opening of Unit 4 and the MDS birthday, this type of support will help each track keep going in my opinion. We all need to work together, those that integrate will prevail those that don’t will fail.

2, when I got in to drifting it was easy, you chucked some drift tyres on a touring chassis job done you had a drift car. Well you had something you could take to a car park and have fun with at least. As the hobby has grown, dedicated drift chassis’ and technology have advanced massively, which don’t get me wrong is a good thing for the hobby. However with these advances the cost of drifting is sky rocketing, while you can still throw some drift tyres on a touring chassis and go to a car park the next step is becoming more and more expensive.

Yes there are “budget” options in the D4 and YD2 but when you put electrics, radio gear, bodyshell and batteries on top of them drifting on a budget is now a £350 – £400 outlay. If I was just getting in to the hobby now I would be very put off by the prices being banded around, I picked up my xxx-d HT VIP from Soul RC a couple of years ago it cost £550 for just the chassis staggering price really but now that same chassis will set you back £645 almost an extra hundred quid. When drifting completely loses its accessibility to people the hobby will die.

I don’t care who gets offended by this next statement but the truth is the hobby is full of snobs! People have forgot where they started and forgot why they got in to drifting in the first place. I don’t care if you have an Overdose chassis with a billion quid’s worth of electrics you are no more or less important to the hobby than the new guy with the 100 quid TT-01. When I chuck my drift chassis on track which owes me at least a grand I don’t get pissy that the kid with a sprint 2 has just hit me if he is trying to learn (I totally understand people getting angry when someone consistently smashes in to them and has no intention of trying to improve themselves that is very annoying).

I think sometimes though we all need to step back and evaluate what we are doing we are a bunch of grown me (In the most part) playing with toy cars. It doesn’t matter that you have just got the latest super doper chassis conversion that will make your car the best thing in the world until next week when something better comes out it is still just a toy car.

Drift Talk: Team Tramdrift, Ratrap and issue 4 we have been busy!

It’s been a slow week on the page, we haven’t really blogged much other than to discuss that terrible bodyshell addiction problem. However it has been a pretty busy couple of weeks behind the scenes, earlier this week we announced a new member of the family in Bullhead who we are delighted to have as part of our team. Bullhead is a team mate with a twist as he is part of Team Trampdrift, I have also been part of that team for a little while doing things behind the scenes there. We are looking to build up Team Trampdrift as a separate thing to Yokomuki but there will be some links to each team. Trampdrift deserves to be kept separate as a lot of hard work has gone in to that name and it should be carried on.

Issue 4

We also now finally have all the content in for issue 4, this one has been a struggle with the worlds and people having their focus on that thankfully content is already coming in for issue 5 already. Issue 4 is shaping up to be a good one our good friend and Yokomuki writer Presta zmarsa has snagged us an interview with drift royalty Bagi San and we have some cool stuff in this one. This issue will probably be dropping around mid to late July.

MDS

MDS has been a big focus this week the group has been working hard to put plans in to place for our trip to JAE in September. We are planning on putting one hell of a show on and having a good time with the drift family. We will be working closely with Dale at Asbo-RC to make sure everybody drifting has what they need to survive the weekend. You can find out more info about the show via our MDS Facebook page.

Ratrap RC

This weekend we are taking Muki on the road again and heading to drifting mecca NRD for a day with our RatrapRC family and to hopefully nail down some great content for the magazine and the blogs. Ratrap have shown so much support to Yokomuki and MDS over the years and that is why we go there, this community thrives on support and nobody works harder than them when it comes to supporting the drift scene. Taking stock

I took a step back this week to catch my breath because it has been a mental year and I am blown away by how far we have managed to take Yokomuki. You have to pinch yourself sometimes when you are talking to a guy from the other side of the world about the magazine and them wanting to be part of it. We really enjoy what we do and me personally I would like to thank everyone who has been involved so far, you have helped make the magazine what it is.

Drift Talk: Awesome drift weekend

Blogs have been a bit slow lately and for good reason, mainly I have ran out of stuff to write about but I felt I needed to write about our weekend because it was freaking awesome. Saturday morning a much reduced Yokomuki team headed to the grand opening of Unit 4’s new drift track, Saturdays team was low on numbers with Slideshow out in Holland and Lee getting ready to head to France with work, Dave was due to come but has been under the weather (get well soon brother) so that left just me, Daz and Ash.

Unit 4 & Ratrap

Apart from it being insanely hot on the day so the vast majority of people were melting all day, Unit 4 was awesome the carpet was a little grippy but with a secret magic ingredient that was soon rectified and allowed for an epic days drifting. The layout was tidy and kept everyone at nice consistent speeds and the barriers were very well thought out and cushioned your car when you found yourself running in to them. It was a fantastic turnout with people heading there from all over the country, Ratrap RC and MDS were also in attendance to show their support.

Dale from Asbo-RC was on hand with his store to tempt the people in attendance to dust off their wallets, he ran some great raffles throughout the day. It is great to see how far Dale has come when I first met him he had just started selling Usukani bits from a little tin now he has a massive range of products.

Saturday took an unexpected turn when me and Daz decided to head back up the M1 with the guys from Ratrap for an evening at the epic NRD. Two tracks in one day I was definitely cashing in all my drift tokens with the wife. After getting back up to Ratrap we had a little drift but mainly sat and had a laugh people were dropping like fly’s due to the heat. By half 11 we were done the concentration had gone, we packed up and headed home after an awesome day.

I was pretty happy with how the YD-2 was handling still not quite where I want it but it was much better than its last outing, I am really starting to see the benefits of the Usukani upgrades, the change of servo also really helped as my gyro wasn’t cutting out. We had our new sticker designs with us which seemed to go down really well lots of people were rocking them by the end of the day. I spent a lot of time talking with Dan (Ratrap) we have some pretty cool ideas for content for the magazine and website, having Ratrap on-board is going to be priceless, they have always had the communities best interests at heart rather than lining their pockets like some people.

We also got our first care package from our sponsor Sideways RC (SRC) and we were blown away there was tonnes of stuff, we have some pretty good plans for what we are going to with it all stay tuned for more info.

The community 

I don’t want to sour a good weekend with negativity but the weekend ended with negativity, in the UK we are blessed with a great community of drifters who support each other this was on show at Unit 4 with other track owners being in attendance. Sadly it seems that there are small pockets within the hobby who seem to rub against this idea and take a rather billy big bollox approach to it. Thankfully they don’t undo all the hard work that people have put in to the hobby and the UK is thriving with great tracks and people who travel and support each other.

It is our birthday drift at MDS Saturday and we are not hammering people if they have never been to come and check us out we are happy to just go with the flow, you will find all members of MDS drifting at places like WRCC, Ratrap, Stockport drifters or Unit 4 because that is where this community is forming and hopefully more and more venues will become part of it because when we all drift together it is such a good laugh.

Finally a big well done to the guys returning from the worlds, it was awesome to see you all out there supporting each other and having fun you did the UK proud. We even spotted a few Yokomuki stickers which was awesome, thank you to everybody who agreed to have one.
